The thyroid is a small organ that packs a big punch when it comes to regulating your body’s metabolism! Shaped like a butterfly and located in the neck, the thyroid is a gland that is part of your endocrine system. The endocrine system is responsible for coordinating a multitude of bodily processes as the thyroid gland works to create hormones that are hard at work to regulate your metabolism. Thyroid problems occur when the thyroid isn’t efficiently working to its best natural ability. Here are 4 common thyroid problems and how to treat:
1. Graves’ Disease
Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the United States, affecting roughly 1 in every 200 people. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive, meaning it produces too much thyroid hormone which can cause your body’s functions to speed up. This autoimmune disorder occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland, causing it to produce too much of the hormone that regulates your metabolism.
2. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, also referred to as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States, impacting 5 in every 100 Americans. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is underactive, meaning it doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones. Most common in middle-aged women, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland, negatively impacting its ability to produce hormones.
3. Thyroid Nodules
Growths that form on or in the thyroid gland are what is known as thyroid nodules. These nodules can be either solid or fluid-filled and causes aren’t entirely known but could potentially include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and iodine deficiency. Most of these nodules are benign but some can be cancerous in rare cases. Many folks with thyroid nodules don’t realize they have them as symptoms can be extremely limited. Thyroid nodules can cause either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
4. Goiter
Goiter is the noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland and is most often caused by iodine deficiency in your diet. Roughly 5% of the American population deals with Goiter while the international number jumps to about 16%. Goiter can be caused by a number of other conditions, including Graves’ disease, congenital hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and pituitary gland tumors.
